Corporate Volunteers in action

Isabella Paúl-K, President of the Autism Out Loud Foundation (Fundación Autismo en voz alta), gave a talk on the activities this foundation is undertaking in support of children and teenagers with autism, a neurological disorder that affects 1 in every 150 newborns.

The staff at our Caracas site listened to the presentation made last July, where the corporate volunteer options were made available, so our staff can support this foundation, which is focused on providing specialized education to children that are affected by this syndrome with the ultimate  goal of reinserting them to society. Among its current projects the Foundation is dedicated to building a center for the attention and integration of children and teenagers with autism in Caracas.

During the presentation, progress made in its building was highlighted, as well as why it is important to be able to count on a center of this nature in the city, given the large increase in the percentage of people with this condition amongst the Venezuelan populace.

OTEPI’s staff will be able to contribute to this noble cause, be it by voluntary contributions to be deducted from their paychecks, by attending the acts organized by the Foundation, or by contributing their professional services to it.

OTEPI in the 19th edition of the World Petroleum Congress: Madrid 2008

OTEPI attended the 19th edition of the World Petroleum Congress celebrated in the city of Madrid, Spain, between June 29th and July 3rd. This international event brings together more than 90 countries, of which 60 are members of the WPC (World Petroleum Council), as well as gathering the most important oil, gas and service companies in the world, offering exceptional business opportunities to all the companies in the field.

Francis Cova, International Business Development VP, attended along with Henry Quiroz, the OTEPI-Iberia Business Development Manager.

“This event has as its objective the discussion and presentation of breakthroughs in the field, technological transference and the adequate use of the world’s petroleum resources. The conferences range from exploration to downstream activities, including financial, management and environmental aspects, making it a must-attend date for OTEPI,” Mrs. Cova told us. “also, it makes for a unique opportunity to contact other representatives of the field, current and potential clients, with which  we will no doubt base our international growth strategies.”

Handling emotional intelligence in the corporations

OTEPI’s staff attended a lecture given by Professor Daniel Gil’Adí, aimed at the handling of emotional intelligence, all as part of the “Having an impeccable and sustainable performance” campaign derived from Otepi’s 2010 Future Plan.

At the beginning of July, a large number of OTEPI employees attended this conference at the company site in Venezuela.

In addition to refreshing the definitions, Dr. Gil’Adí oriented the talk towards the use of techniques based on Emotional Intelligence to better one’s performance, based on the values and principles which rule our company.

Daniel Gil’Adí has been an advisor to companies and professor in the fields of convergence between psychology and management. His fields of investigation include the exercise of leadership, teamwork, organizations that learn, and emotional intelligence. He has a post-Doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology from Temple University, and a Doctorate in “The Clinical Psychology of Development” from Bryn Mawr College. He’s the author of the book “Emotional Intelligence in Practice” (“Inteligencia emocional en práctica”), among others.

Vacation plan for OTEPI’s kids

The kids of our employees, once again, enjoyed happier vacations thanks to OTEPI.

The children gave credence to the success of this plan, which allowed the sons, nephews and grandchildren of our employees, between the ages of 4 and 11, to enjoy two weeks full of fun, organized by the Human Resources and Services Unit, with the professional support of Organización Halcón, C.A.

The young ones enjoyed activities such as visits to parks, pools, the Ávila mountain and the movies.

But perhaps the most catching activity was at the closing, where a mini amusement park was set up next to our Caracas site, with inflatable mattresses, mats and slides, as well as hot dog, soft drink and mini doughnut carts.

IV Back to School Fair

As in previous years, the Human Resources and Services Unit organized this fair so that back-to-school time would be easier on the organization’s staff.

For two consecutive weeks, OTEPI’s employees were able to buy school supplies, uniforms and back-packs inside the company’s installations, and payable in comfortable installments.

“This type of activity helps the back-to-school process for the parents, who often don’t have the time to go out and buy the necessary supplies for their children’s return to school; and, obviously, it’s an important aid that the employee can pay for it in several installments,” commented Dotty Mendoza.

We are what we eat

As part of the plan to better the quality of life of the staff, Nutritionist Luis Mosqueda is holding consultations in our Caracas site on a permanent basis.

Given the warm reception given to the talks on nutrition of the past months, the Human Resources and Services Unit set up an office on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so that Luis Mosqueda, Nutritionist, can see those members of staff who require professional orientation regarding the nutritional control of illnesses, such as high blood pressure, gastritis, obesity and diabetes, all at a special cost for OTEPI staff, and without them having to leave their workplace.
